Curriculum Overview
Our School Christian Vision
With thankfulness, courage and love, we strive to improve heart and mind. At Chilton Foliat Primary School we honour our educational heritage, supported by a strong Christian ethos. We strive to provide a diverse education that inspires children to develop a thirst for knowledge. This is delivered in a safe, thoughtful and nurturing environment promoting self-discipline, motivation and excellence in all that we do. We encourage strong partnerships and inclusive relationships amongst pupils, parents, carers, staff and the wider community.
At Chilton Foliat Church of England (VA) Primary School, for all our pupils, our intention is to offer the best of educational experience, diverse, enriched, community focussed and inclusive. Supported by a strong Christian ethos, our curriculum is broad, balanced, connected and values based, inspiring our children to develop a thirst for knowledge. We believe that our values, thankfulness, courage and love encourage reflective and inspirational attitudes which are nurtured to help all our children discover the very best of themselves.
Curriculum Overview
We pride ourselves on offering a colourful and varied curriculum allowing us to bring learning to life. Our topic-based approach is designed to allow us to teach the breadth of the National Curriculum, alongside a wealth of enrichment experiences. We have the highest expectations for all; every pupil is their own individual and whatever their needs, they are individually met by a talented staff team in an environment where everyone gets the support they need to thrive.
Our curriculum design is ambitious and logical. The knowledge and skills our children acquire builds up from Reception to Year 6. Our teachers are clear about what they must teach and when, considering our mixed-age classes.
What makes our curriculum relevant to our school?
Christion Vision and Values - Our curriculum offer is underpinned by our school Christian Vision and Values. The core principles are linked to our theological biblical underpinning (Jesus said, “Everyone who drinks of this water will be thirsty again, but whoever drinks the water I give him will never thirst”. John 4:13) where we strive to improve heart and mind and thirst for knowledge. As a school community we believe that for young minds to flourish and to know more, their mental health and wellbeing needs to be nurtured and secure. Living out our school values, thankfulness, courage and love is how we apply ourselves, as a whole school community, to achieving our vision.
Three Tiered Approach: Universal, Targeted and Specialist Provision
We embrace the needs of all pupils and has a whole school approach to special educational needs and disabilities (SEND). We provide effective opportunities for all pupils by responding to people’s diverse learning needs, setting suitable challenges, and overcoming barriers to learning. Through Quality First Teaching, we engage and support the learning of all children in our care. Every teacher is a teacher of every child including those with SEND, getting it right for one means we get it right for all.
Our Local Context
As the children journey through school, we use The River Kennet as a symbol of our vehicle. The river provides direction, purpose and sustenance. The riverbank, stable and strong, represents the support of our whole school community; our governors stand on the bridge and can see and plan for the strategic direction the school needs to take; the signposts along the way stand for our diverse and inspiring curriculum supporting our children as they thirst for knowledge. The river, both as a symbol and as one of England’s most important chalk streams, is important to us. We understand it’s environmental significance and this inspires a wider focus on the “Power of Water”. We plan for cross-curricular links which are authentic and relevant. We are connected with a local charity, Action for River Kennet (ARK); we engage in global studies via organisations such as Water Aid and UNICEF; as courageous advocates we lobby for better environmental water protection and better water waste management systems in the UK.
Love of Reading - We love to read so our curriculum is driven by our extensive range of text choices, both fiction and not fiction. Every curriculum subject owns a carefully chosen library of books. They are age appropriate and located in every classroom for ready access. Our curriculum is cross-curricular and we choose our texts in order to maximise learning connections across many subjects. In doing so, our children are supported to know and remember more. Our Reading River demonstrates our commitment to developing our global outlook, promoting, Equality, Belonging, Inclusion and Diversity (IBID) by show-casing our ambitious choice of texts.
How do we prepare our children for the next phase in their education?
We want our children to leave Chilton Foliat Primary School with a deep understanding of the impact of living out our school values. They will be well-rounded independent learners who strive to achieve their best, be able to contribute positively to a wider community and are kind, loyal and fair. They will want to continue to thirst for knowledge and strive to improve heart and mind prepared for the challenges, experiences and responsibilities of the next stage of their education.
