Muntjac Class - Years 3 and 4 (Lower key Stage 2)
Dear Parents of Muntjac Class
Welcome to Summer Term 2025
Welcome back to another exciting term. This letter explains some of the curriculum content we will be learning all about and useful information on homework and routines.
Throughout term 5, our topic focus will include learning all about Rivers; Why they are important, the creatures and animals that use them, the journey of a river from source to sea, exploring the towns, villages and cities that some of the major UK rivers run through and comparing to some of the world’s largest rivers.
In Term 6, we will be moving our learning to the Rainforest; the importance of the rainforest, creatures and animals that live within the different layers, learning about where they are located on the globe and why.
Within RE, we are looking further into Hinduism and learning about the wider world religions and for Science we will be investigating and learning about states of matter (Solids, liquids and gases) and the water cycle.
Our learning is cross curiculuar so links will be made using a wide variety of carefully choosen fiction and non-fiction books. Please see our curriculum web for further information. Please also make sure you keep up to date with school news and events by reading emails, notes at the bottom of homework and making regular visits to the school website.
The Christian value we are all sharing this term is Love and around the school we are encouraging all our children to show and put into practice this important value. For every value, we ask a Big Question and for this term it is ‘How do I contribute to a loving world?
Homework
Homework in Muntjac Class is set weekly. It will be sent home on gmail every Thursday to be handed in the following Thursday. Further information about homework can be found inside the Reading Diary and Homework Exercise Book.
Reading - children should read at least 20 minutes per day with an adult. Please record progress in the reading log each day to enable your child to earn their Reading Awards. Reading records are to be brought in on Tuesdays to be monitored. Inside the Reading Diary are a list of books we recommend the children should read to increase their reading and writing quality. You will also find a list of questions to ask your child after each reading session.
Maths – the children will be given a variety of online activities, games, practical activies and worksheets to reinforce their learning. A particulary helpful and fun website is https://www.mathsisfun.com/ and https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/subjects/z826n39 . All maths homework should be completed using a standard writing pencil and ruler.
Please also continue to use TT rockstars as often as possible to improve your child’s rapid recall and fluency in timestables. At the beginning of Term 6 all year 4 children will participate in the Multiplication Tables Check (MTC) which is statutory for all primary schools. The purpose of the MTC is to determine whether pupils can recall their times tables fluently, which is essential for future success in mathematics. It will help schools to identify pupils who have not yet mastered their times tables, so that additional support can be provided.
Writing – children are expected to complete their homework writing activities independently after a discussion about what they need to achieve. Please encourage children to spell the High Frequency Words correctly (a list can be found on the inside of the Homework Book). We do like the children to challenge themselves to use higher level vocabulary learned within class and through reading. Work should be completed using pencil.
Spellings - the children are encourages to use SpellZone daily to help their individual progress and follow their individual spelling path ways.
Topic – Occasionally topic homework will be sent home which will ask the children to use a variety knowledge and skills. As a result, the children will be given extra time to complete this sort of homework task.
P.E
Pupils will need to bring PE kit on Thursday and keep their kit in school all week. The children need to have red shorts or tracksuit bottoms, a plain white T.Shirt and trainers. As the weather becomes cooler, the children may also need a plain red sweater or the school hoodie. If possible, please can the children also have a change of socks and trainers for P.E (School shoes should NOT be worn during PE sessions). As always please ensure all clothing including socks are labelled. You would be surprised where clothes can end up, no matter how careful we all seem to be! If children do not have P.E kit, they will be provided with spare kit where possible or given learning to complete in another class.
Water bottles
Children are allowed to bring bottles to school (please also ensure they are labelled). During the day the children should only have water. Any fresh juices should only be consumed with lunch time food.
Further information about school trips and events will follow in due course. If you have any further questions, please don’t hesitate to contact us.
Thank you in advance for your support and we are looking forward to supporting your children as they work and learn during this summer term.
Kindest regards, Miss McClintock and Miss Wilson
