British Values

At Chilton Foliat Church of England (VA) Primary School we wholeheartedly support and promote the spiritual, moral, social and cultural (SMSC) development of all our pupils. Through this commitment, underpinned by our Christian ethos and core values of thankfulness, courage and love, we can embed understanding and experience of our fundamental British Values: values of democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty and mutual respect and tolerance of those with different faiths and beliefs.

Our values help prepare our children for life in modern Britain. Our broad and balanced curriculum offers many opportunities to explore and discuss examples of British Values and how we live them out in our community and in a wider society.

As a result, our pupils have a shared understanding and respect for:

  • The importance of combatting discrimination with the emphasis on understanding and respecting differing viewpoints, fostering an atmosphere of inclusivity
  • Their role in influencing decision-making by taking part in democratic processes, like voting and petitioning/lobbying, encouraging our pupils to take responsibility for their behaviour and understand their rights and personal freedoms
  • The freedom under British law to choose different faiths and beliefs where any form of prejudice is not tolerated
  • The knowledge that the law is there to keep us all safe and emphasis on the importance of laws and rules to guide us all in distinguishing between right and wrong.

Our commitment to promoting these fundamental British values is seamlessly woven into the fabric of our personal development through PSHE lessons and Collective  Worship. As an essential aspect of our curriculum, we strive to celebrate the diversity of modern-day Britain and nurture a moral and cultural understanding that enriches our school community.
